2017 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Vaduz
Vaduz, Liechtenstein, August 9, 2017. Some 4,000 spectators visited the Small Countries Division (SCD) Beach Volleyball European Championships held at the Beacharena Vaduz last week. After a short break, action in the alpine principality resumed on Wednesday at that same venue with the double-gender CEV Satellite, with women’s teams contesting the qualification round and vying for a spot in the Main Draw.
As many as 16 teams from 12 nations fought for a place in the women’s Main Draw, which starts on Thursday at noon. Switzerland’s Nicole Eiholzer (pictured)/Dunja Gerson, currently the no. 3 team in their country and one of the top ones in the qualification round, secured their place in the Main Draw and did so with a 2-0 victory over Eva Freiberger/Elisabeth Klopf from Austria. They complete the Main Draw along with another seven qualifiers; the main features of the Main Draw are Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova/Ievgeniia Shchypkova and Jolien Sinnema/Joy Stubbe of the Netherlands.
The other qualifiers are Germany’s Sandra Seyfferth/Sandra Ittlinger, Romania’s Adriana-Maria Matei/Beata Vaida, Norway’s Emilie Olimstad/Oda Johanne Ulveseth, Czech Republic’s Martina Bonnerova/Sarka Nakladalova, France’s Alexandra Jupiter/Ophélie Lusson, Spain’s Amaranta Fernandez/Angela Lobato and Denmark’s Cecilie Køllner Olsen/Laerke Mygind Grønfeldt.
Apart from home stars Manuel Gahr/Maximilian von Deichmann, the gold medal winners from the SCD Championship, Scotland’s Robin Miedzybrodzki/Seain Cook will also take part in the CEV Satellite but they will have to stand the challenge brought by much more experienced opponents. These include Germany’s Alexander Walkenhorst, a former U23 European champion and the brother to reigning Olympic, world and European champion Kira. Austria’s Florian Schnetzer/Peter Eglseer, the winners of last week’s tournament in Vaduz, will start their journey in the CEV Satellite from the qualification round scheduled for Thursday and starting as early as at 9 am.
