Volero signs Cuban star and former Olympian Kenia Carcaces
News from the clubs
Zurich, Switzerland, February 13, 2013. Switzerland’s Volero ZURICH – that participated in this year’s CEV Volleyball Champions League though without success – recently completed the transfer of Cuban star Kenia Carcaces. The 27-year old outside hitter was a member of the Cuban national team from 2006 through 2011, thereby totaling 85 caps including the matches she played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Carcaces – who stands at 189 cm – was born in Holguin in 1986 and played in her home town until 2005 before she signed for one season for Japan’s Hisamitsu Springs, claiming the All Japan Volleyball Championship with that side. She stands out for her amazing jump power, and as a member of Cuba’s national team claimed gold at the NORCECA Championships in 2007 and finished fourth at the Beijing Olympics a year later. She is well-known in Switzerland for she represented Cuba at the Montreux Volley Masters claiming twice silver (2007 and 2011) and once the bronze medal (2008).
“I have been inactive for the past 18 months and so this contract with Volero is a great opportunity to get back in the right shape. I do hope that next year we’ll participate in the CEV Volleyball Champions League and will play there the best teams in the world” Carcaces says. She will be immediately integrated into the training program of Volero and will be available through this coming summer as a sparring partner for the Swiss national team by the time the group complete their preparations for the final round of the European Championship that Zurich will co-host with four German cities.
