Beach Volleyball season to get started with CEV Satellite in Ankara
2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite - Ankara

Ankara, Turkey, May 25, 2016. The first edition of the CEV Satellite Ankara will be played from Thursday through Sunday at a venue which has been set up at Ankara Atlantis Shopping Centre specifically for the event. The tournament coincides with the official opening of the 2016 European Beach Volleyball season and takes place only a few days away from the major highlight coming up next week in Biel / Bienne, Switzerland, i.e. the 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship Final.

A press conference specifically focussing on the organisation of the CEV Satellite was held on Wednesday at the local premises of Turkey’s Sports Writers Association (TSWA). This was attended by Kerem Öncel, President of the Ankara’s Branch of the TSWA, CEV Technical Supervisor Christian Schemeth, Turkish Volleyball Federation (TVF) Beach Volleyball Director Oğuz Değirmenci, and Özden Çaban, Marketing Responsible of Atlantis Shopping Centre.

Mr Öncel said: “We will continue to support the organisation of events that increase the brand value of Ankara. We will also continue to organise tournaments in a number of sports. Thanks to all involved, and especially to promoter SPQR, the CEV and TVF for their collaboration in the delivery of this event. I hope that this tournament will help people forget some of the terrible things that Ankara has experienced lately.”

Oğuz Değirmenci, Beach Volleyball Director of the Turkish Volleyball Federation, said: “We attach great importance to the organisation of international competitions. This tournament provides teams with the opportunity to claim FIVB ranking points and this is very important to further raise the profile of the competition. We are happy that Ankara is hosting a tournament of such high calibre. This is the most important CEV Beach Volleyball event to have ever taken place in Ankara. We would like to thank Turkey’s Sports Writers Association’s Ankara Branch and SPQR Sports Organisations. We look forward to delivering to the local audience a number of enjoyable matches so that everyone will have a good time.”

The CEV Satellite Ankara is organised by SPQR Sports Organisation in cooperation with the CEV and the Turkish Volleyball Federation. 7,500 euros in prize money will be at stake in addition to FIVB ranking points. Teams from Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland and Ukraine are set to compete in Turkey’s capital.

The competition will start on Thursday at 9:00 am local time at the Atlantis Shopping Centre with the qualification round and come to a close on Sunday, May 29, with the medal matches.
