Happy Birthday, London Giants!
News from the clubs
London, England, August 12, 2020. Can it really be five years already? Indeed it is. It was on August 11, 2015 that Little Giants Volleyball Club was born, starting with a single open session and one men’s team. It achieved promotion at the end of the winter season. Some start.
Outside the sports centre there was much unseen activity as connections were established and sound finances put in place. The club funded one of its current home ground facilities and Giants’ own first ever volleyball court. That season Giants women’s team was established and they emulated the men by lifting their first trophy. The community kept growing and, as a result, the number of open sessions increased. In 2016, Little Giants’ first ever tournament took place and immediately it was a blast! The club kept growing and in its third year started 7-days-a-week open sessions. It funded another venue to have volleyball facilities. It introduced junior volleyball sessions. Its tournaments moved to some of the biggest and most iconic venues in the city of London. With the indoor season ended, there was again no sitting on laurels and the club launched its summer outdoor grass volleyball sessions.
Consolidation was essential in year four but every opportunity for growth was also seized and the club’s under 15 and under 16 boys and girls teams were born. This led to an invitation to train the borough’s youth squad to compete in the London Youth Games.
The club is becoming a big mover in its community with its daily open groups for adults and juniors as well as their competitive women’s and men’s teams competing in National English League in addition to growing junior teams in all age groups.
With the current, very fluid pandemic situation, with rules being changed at very short notice, Little Giants has a dedicated COVID-19 team, who advise and implement the Government and Volleyball England guidelines.
The club now is 5 years old. Little Giants is ‘on the ball’ and it will continue to grow, with the agenda this year being the ‘Development of Junior Volleyball in London Schools’.
