Beach Volleyball to return soon in Portugal as well!
News from the National Federations
Porto, Portugal, July 6, 2020. The Lidl 2020 Championship, which brings together the best Portuguese Beach Volleyball teams, will start on July 17 at Praia da Rocha, in Portimão, with pre-registration open until July 10.
The main reason for Beach Volleyball to be able to resume is the fact that national authorities regard it as an ‘individual sport’, as explained by Leonel Salgueiro, National Technical Director.
Thus, the Lidl 2020 Championship starts on July 17 in Portimão, an Algarve city known for providing the stage to many national and international competitions in various sports. It has played host to numerous stages of the National Beach Volleyball Championship, the AVAL’s Regional Championship as well as to the Portimão Beach Volley Youth Summer Festival - LET THEM PLAY, held in 2015. Moreover, the city in southern Portugal has already hosted two editions of the CEV Volleyball European League Finals (2007 and 2009) and matches of the 2019 Women European Silver League, among many other important events.
In all, there will be five stages, with the fifth and final stop due to take place at Porto’s International Beach, next to the Transparent Building. In addition to the National Championship, the sands of the beach adjacent to the Transparent Building have already received several international events, including the Under-19 World Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2014, the Under-18 European Championships (2010), the Under-23 continental event (2011) and the 7th FISU World University Championship in 2014.
Roberto Reis / Fabrício Silva (Kibinho) and Juliana Antunes / Tânia Oliveira have held the titles of Beach Volleyball national champions since August 18, 2019, when they won the respective finals of the ActivoBank Championship, played at Porto International Beach, in Porto.
Roberto Reis and Fabrício Silva have claimed the last four editions of the event, and they boast as many as eight national titles on their resume (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019).
In the women’s competition, Juliana and Tânia (re)conquered the title of champions they had previously claimed in 2016 and 2017 by defeating Vanessa Paquete (champion in 2018) and Beatriz Pinheiro by 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) in the final.
