Historic victory for Aluron Virtu CMC ZAWIERCIE in European Cups debut!

Dabrowa Gornicza/Zawiercie, Poland, December 12, 2019. Aluron Virtu CMC ZAWIERCIE beat Hebar PAZARDZHIK 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-18) in what was the very first match in the European Cups in the club’s history. Alexandre Ferreira received the prize for the MVP of this historic game played in Dabrowa Gornicza.
The match started in the best possible way for the hosts, but their rivals showed that they were not likely to surrender that quickly. Hebar put much pressure on the ‘Jurassic Knights’ with their service and even took the lead at 12-9. However, Aluron Virtu CMC quickly made up for this little setback and eventually cruised to a 25-21 win.
After the break, the Knights started to dig more and more Hebar attacks and thanks to that as well as to very effective spikes, they took the lead at 14-10. The team from Pazardzhik tried to come back but Aluron Virtu CMC did not allow them to, killing almost every side-out ball. Nikolay Penchev finished the second set with a good attack.
The third set was a yellow-and-green show, especially from the 9-metre line. The Hebar receivers had huge problems with keeping the ball in play and when they finally succeeded in doing so, the Jurassic Knights’ block-defence system worked really well. In the end, Mark Lebedew gave a chance to substitutes and one of them, Wojciech Ferens, finished the match with an effective spike. The fans decided that the MVP award should go to Portuguese outside hitter Alexandre Ferreira who scored 18 points.
“It was a good start, but that does not mean too much, since we have to focus on the away match as well,” Ferreira said. “I would like to thank our fans, who always support us with so much passion; there was a great atmosphere tonight. The Bulgarians have a good team with experienced players such as Todor Aleksiev, and therefore we should take the away match very seriously.”
