Two podium finishes for Dutch teams at 4-Star event in Mexico
News from the FIVB
Luxembourg, November 18, 2019. Teams from the Netherlands secured two medals from the last Beach Volleyball tournament of the year 2019 – a 4-Star World Tour event held in Chetumal, Mexico. Alexander Brouwer/Robert Meeuwsen had to settle for the second place in the men’s competition, while 2018 European champions Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink finished third in the women’s tournament.
Brouwer/Meeuwsen lost 1-2 (16-21, 21-16, 12-15) in the final to USA’s Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb, with Gibb becoming the oldest player to secure a gold medal from the FIVB World Tour at 43 years, nine months and 12 days.
The Crabb family had more to celebrate in Mexico, since Trevor Crabb and Tri Bourne completed the podium, edging German qualifiers Alexander Walkenhorst and Sven Winter in the bronze medal match (21-16, 21-12). The Germans could nevertheless be happy with their achievement, especially since Walkenhorst has been recovering from an injury that has plagued him since this past July.
Keizer/Meppelink (NED) secured a bronze medal from the 4-Star World Tour event held in Chetumal, Mexico
Keizer/Meppelink were the only European team to reach the women’s semi-finals. They travel home with the bronze medals after their Brazilian opponents, Taiana Lima and Talita Antunes had to withdraw from the ‘small final’ due to injury. The gold medal went to Australia’s Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar, who edged China’s Wang Fan and Xia Xinyi in the final.
