European Cups debut ends in 0-3 loss for Polish rookies Legionovia
CEV Volleyball Cup 2021

Legionowo, Poland, November 19, 2020. On Wednesday night, DPD Legionovia LEGIONOWO of Poland could not take a victory from their historic debut in European competitions as they lost their home match with the experienced French team of BEZIERS Angels in three sets (27-29, 17-25, 14-25). Malina Terrell of BEZIERS Angels scored 11 times to receive the prize for the Most Valuable Player of this fixture as both teams returned to the court after a long break due to a quarantine period they had to observe after some of their players had tested positive to the novel coronavirus. BEZIERS Angels will need to take two sets from the re-match next week to secure their spot in the 8th Finals of the CEV Cup.

Paula Yamila Nizetich was the best scorer of the game with 17 points for the visitors from France. Olivia Różański topped the charts for the hosts with 14 points.

Fabien Simondet, head coach of BEZIERS Angels: “We are really happy with this victory. We knew the quality of our opponent. We put much pressure with our serve and this made the difference. We have seven days to prepare for a very difficult game at home. We only took the first step towards reaching the next round.”

Alessandro Chiappini, head coach of DPD Legionovia: “First of all, I would like congratulate BEZIERS on their good game; they deserve this victory. I think my players started the game with a good attitude, we tried to play with confidence and everybody accounted for some positive support. Sadly, we could not finish the first set in our favour. From the second set, we slowly lost the positive vibes and the match became more difficult for us. We are improving day by day the level of training after a long break. It takes time to find back the right shape and good communication on the court but from what I saw in the last two days, I think we can be positive about the future.”

Izabela Lemańczyk, libero of DPD Legionovia: “In my opinion, our rivals did not surprise us with something special, as we were prepared for a hard game from the very beginning and rather none regarded us as the favourite of this matchup. BEZIERS proved with this performance that they think seriously about achieving a good result in the CEV Cup this year. We cannot say that it was the best debut for our club but I strongly believe that we will do better in the re-match. I think that we have to work on our attack and service to make the game as difficult as possible for our opponents. Today we did not lack the determination to fight, but it was not enough against a team with so much experience in international competitions.”
