Larnaka 2-Star event cancelled due to resurgence of pandemic in Cyprus
News from the CEV
Luxembourg, August 24, 2020. With much regret and disappointment, the Cyprus Volleyball Association and the Municipality of Larnaka have informed the CEV that they unfortunately have to cancel the FIVB World Tour 2-Star women’s tournament due to take place in late September in Larnaka.
The decision is due to a resurgence in the number of COVID-19 infections registered across the Mediterranean island. The Cyprus Epidemiological Monitoring Unit and the Ministry of Health have announced the introduction of new measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, including strict guidelines for foreigners travelling to Cyprus.
This negative evolution has ultimately affected the preparations for the World Tour event and has hindered the organisers’ ability to secure much-needed financial help to support the delivery of an international tournament of this calibre and significance.
Despite this setback, the Cyprus Volleyball Association will continue to review possibilities to organise Beach Volleyball and other international Volleyball events in Cyprus, doing so as soon as the conditions allow and the pandemic is under control.
The CEV wishes to thank the Cyprus Volleyball Association and the local authorities for their hard work and the resilience they have shown in their efforts to play host to an international event under the current challenging circumstances, hoping for the return of international Beach Volleyball to Cyprus in 2021.
