Luxembourg, 19 August, 2020. With only a few days remaining before the participants in this season's European Cups will find out if the odds are in their favor in regards to the opponents they will be facing in the earlier rounds and the CEV Champions League Volley 4th Round, we take a look at the procedure that will be followed for the Drawing of Lots of Europe's premiere club volleyball competition.
On Friday 21 August 12:30 CEST in Luxembourg, both the men and women teams participating in this season's Drawing of Lots for the 4th Round of the CEV Champions League will learn their opponents!
How it works
The 4th Round of the Women's and Men's CEV Champions League Volley will have 20 teams competing in 5 Pools of 4 teams each, using the double round-robin system.
18 Teams are directly seeded in the 4th Round based on the Champions League Ranking, while the remaining 2 spots will be awarded to the 2 teams qualifying from the 2nd Round.
All teams will be divided into 4 Cups, according to the 2021 Champions League Ranking list, starting with the 18 seeded teams, followed by the 2 slots for the 2nd Round Winners.
*In the women’s competition, since National Federations have taken 17 of the 18 slots available for teams seeded directly to the 4th Round, three (and not two) will progress from the early rounds to the pool stage, thus accounting for the required 20 clubs needed for the group phase
For both the Men's and the Women's draws we will start from the top and work from left to right as the teams are drawn. This means that the teams from the Cup 1 are drawn and placed from left to right in the first row of each Pool. The process continues following the same rules until the last team of Cup 4 will be placed in the last Pool spot.
From the 18 seeded teams, teams ranked as 1st and 2nd from one National Federation cannot be drawn into the same pool.
Matches in the 4th Round are played from November to February, after which there will be another Draw on the 11th February for the Quarter Finals through until the final event, The Super Finals scheduled for the 1st May 2021.
The Drawing of Lots will start at 12:30 CEST, Friday 21 August and will be streamed live on the CEV Champions League Volley Facebook Page and on the CEV European Volleyball Youtube Channel. For more exclusive content and behind the scenes access follow our social media accounts on the day.
