SCHWERIN ease past Finnish opponents to make it to #CEVCupW quarterfinals
CEV Volleyball Cup 2020 - Women

Schwerin, Germany, February 6, 2020. After their 3-1 away victory in Finland two weeks ago, SSC Palmberg SCHWERIN of Germany needed to take two sets ‘only’ from their home re-match with HÄMEENLINNA to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the CEV Volleyball Cup 2020 – Women. The hosts delivered that and could celebrate their progression to the next round after sweeping away their opponents for a double 25-15 win in the first two sets.

The visitors from Finland tried to put some pressure on the home side, but SCHWERIN responded well, with the help of Kimberly Drewniok and Nicole Oude Luttikhuis. The local favourites received very well and this allowed their setter to use all of the spikers in the best way. SCHWERIN eventually sealed the first set 25-15 and achieved an identical score in a second set, where the 1,902 fans in attendance enjoyed many long, entertaining rallies.

At this stage, and with qualification in their pockets, SCHWERIN relaxed a bit and paid a high price for this, losing the third set at a canter (16-25). The hosts regrouped for a 6-0 run at the beginning of the fourth set where they put pressure again with their serve and especially Oude Luttikhuis (eventual top scorer with 25 points) showed the same quality performance she had delivered two weeks ago in Finland. SCHWERIN eased to a 25-12 win to seal a 3-1 victory and the German can now prepare to play Belgium’s Asterix Avo BEVEREN in the next round.
