Europe’s rising stars to take centre stage at #EuroVolleyU16W in Trieste
2019 CEV U16 Volleyball European Championship - Women

Trieste, Italy, July 11, 2019. Trieste will be hosting, together with Croatia’s capital Zagreb, the 2019 edition of the U16 Women’s European Championship from July 13 to 21, 2019. Some 48 hours away from the first matches, a number of authorities addressed the media at the Civic Museum of Oriental Art as Trieste and Zagreb play host to the second edition of this competition. Back in 2017, Italy claimed gold at the first ever #EuroVolleyU16W held in Sofia, Bulgaria. Live streaming of all of the group matches involving Team Italy as well as of the semis and medal matches will be available on EuroVolleyTV.

“I am very happy and grateful to be here,” said CEV Vice-President and Jury President, Ms Margaret Ann Fleming MBE. “I would like to thank the organisers, sponsors and volunteers, who have worked for the success of this event. I am certain that we will see a great show and a tournament of absolute level. Trieste is a beautiful city: there could not be a better setting to host this competition.”

“It is a privilege for Trieste and for Friuli Venezia Giulia to host such an event,” said the President of the Regional Government, Mr Massimiliano Fedriga. “Sport, in fact, is fundamental to the social growth of the region. It is of paramount importance, in particular, to ensure that youth events find more and more space and that their delivery happens at the highest level. I believe that the latter has a great social relevance, as much as the sporting side to it.”

“I firmly believe that it is a great opportunity for Trieste to host such an event. Working at an event that involves young people provides a further boost to ensure that everything is organised and prepared in the best way possible,” added the President of FIPAV Friuli Venezia Giulia, Mr Alessandro Michelli. “I would like to thank the Regional Government, the Municipality of Trieste, the CEV, FIPAV and the Committee of Trieste for their support towards the success of this event, as well as all those who have made this possible.”

“I want to thank those who are working on the organisation of this event. I think U16 is a special but important age, because that is when talent ‘explodes’ and comes to the fore,” commented Ferruccio Riva, BoA member at the Italian Volleyball Federation. “I am convinced that for the rising stars of European Volleyball this championship will be a great opportunity to grow while playing against the best teams in this age group. The public, on the other hand, will be lucky to see the champions of tomorrow up close, with the hope that Italy will stay here in Trieste until July 21.”

Trieste is hosting the matches of Pool II where home favourites Italy take on Belgium, Romania, Serbia, the Netherlands and Turkey. The top two teams from the group will contest the semis and medal matches at the end of next week against the first and second-placed teams from Pool I that is due to take place in Zagreb. This features the national teams of Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Russia and Slovenia.
