AYDIN BBSK and Saugella MONZA to battle for #CEVChallengeCupW crown
2019 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women

Luxembourg, March 6, 2019. Turkish rookies AYDIN BBSK were the first team to qualify for the finals of the 2019 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women by virtue of their 3-1 home victory over GEN-I Volley NOVA GORICA of Slovenia. AYDIN BBSK continue Turkey’s tradition in the competition – with BURSA BBSK having contested three of the last four finals. Their opponent will be Italy’s Saugella MONZA, who needed a Golden Set win after a dramatic 2-3 home loss to Volero LE CANNET to secure their spot in the final.

AYDIN BBSK (TUR) vs. GEN-I Volley NOVA GORICA (SLO) 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-22, 25-19)

•    AYDIN BBSK had secured a 3-2 victory last week in Slovenia and as a result, the hosts had a small edge going into the re-match.
•    AYDIN BBSK claimed the first set at a canter (25-14) before the second set became a much closer affair, as both teams obviously knew how much was at stake. NOVA GORICA slowly but surely extended their lead and eventually levelled the match.
•    However, AYDIN BBSK were back in control and after sweeping the third and fourth sets, they secured their qualification for the final.

Brayelin Martinez, player of AYDIN BBSK and top scorer with 21 points: “First of all, I want to congratulate all of my teammates. I am very happy with the victory. I can say that it was a good game for us with a good atmosphere here in Aydin. Now we obviously want to win the title.”

Saugella MONZA (ITA) vs. Volero LE CANNET (FRA) 2-3 (25-16, 15-25, 21-25, 25-18, 13-15); Golden Set: 15-9

•    What a dramatic match to determine the second team to contest the Challenge Cup Finals! Saugella MONZA first lost 2-3 at home to Volero after it looked like Serena Ortolani and her teammates were about to finish it off in their favour at the tiebreak.
•    Volero first fought back by taking the second and third sets after losing the opening stanza, making it an uphill climb for the home side coached by Miguel Angel Falasca.
•    Ortolani and Rachael Adams set the tone for Saugella, as Volero responded with the attacks by Ana Bjelica and Nancy Carrillo. Libero Chiara Arcangeli delivered some spectacular actions in the Golden Set where Francesca Devetag made the difference with some massive blocks as well.
•    Saugella MONZA will have the privilege of playing the return match with AYDIN BBSK at home.

Chiara Arcangeli, libero of Saugella MONZA: “We achieved yet another goal even though now we want to win the Challenge Cup title. We fought with much determination tonight and put all of our efforts into this semi-final. I am happy because it was an extremely close match. Volero have many great players on their roster and they never give up. We fought like warriors tonight and we will be doing just the same in the final.”
