Rookies TRABZON claim tie-break win in first round of Challenge Cup semis
2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women

Odintsovo, Russia, March 9, 2016. Turkey’s rookies TRABZON Idman Ocagi claimed on Wednesday night the first round of the 2016 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women semi-final with Russia’s Zarechie ODINTSOVO. The winners of the 2015 BVA Cup cruised to a 3-2 away victory (25-13, 14-25, 21-25, 25-20, 15-13) to get a small edge for the re-match which is due to follow this coming Sunday in Turkey.

Zarechie ODINTSOVO did not find a way to cope with the Turkish solid performance from the service line and TRABZON easily claimed the opening set by a landslide 25-13. The second set, on the other hand, went completely the other way around with Zarechie imposing their rule to win it at a canter (25-14). The third set was a lot closer with the Russian team eventually prevailing at 25-21. However, the hosts started making more and more mistakes in the fourth set and ended up trailing 11-18. Though Zarechie cut their deficit to three points at 18-15, this attempted comeback was not enough to prevent TRABZON from securing a 25-20 win. Zarechie seemed nevertheless close to securing a tie-break win when leading 13-11 in the fifth set but some problems in attack paved the way with gold for TRABZON that scored four in a row to celebrate a 15-13 set win.

Irina Voronkova finished the match on 33 points but this impressive tally was not enough for Zarechie to claim the first round of the semis. “We did not play as a team. Our young players have no experience at this level. However, we now know how to play the Turkish team and we will be better prepared for the re-match in Trabzon. We will be trying to do everything we can to win the away match,” Voronkova said.
