Omichka finishes Superleague regular season in second place
News from the clubs

Omsk, Russia, April 15, 2014. Omichka OMSK REGION just finished the regular season of the Russian Superleague in second place, an accomplishment which represents their best result to date. Omichka played their closest competitor for the second rank in the standing, Dinamo KRASNODAR, in the last round of the regular season and comfortably edged past their opponents in straight sets (25-18, 25-14, 25-23) to cement their position behind 2014 Champions League gold medallists Dinamo KAZAN.

Omichka finished the regular season with 16 victories in 20 matches and a record of 51 sets won vs. 22 lost. This accounts for 46 points, enough to claim second place in the standing topped by Dinamo KAZAN. Team captain Elena Yureva, setter Marina Babeshina, middle-blocker Anastasia Shlyakhovaya, and opposite Nancy Carrillo played all 20 matches thereby chiefly contributing to this outstanding result.

Omichka will now play Tyumen-TyuMGU in the best-of-three 1/4 final series which is set to start on April 20 in Tyumen before the return match follows on April 23 in Omsk.

“We only needed to take two points from our match with Dinamo to secure our second place in the standing,” comments Omichka head coach Zoran Terzic. “However, the team was very concentrated and performed really strong. They practically made no mistakes in attack. Also our block and service worked really well. This is definitely our best season in the Russian league. Now we are ready to take on the 1/4 finals, we are a strong team.”

Omichka debuted this year in the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League making the Playoffs 6 where they lost to Turkey’s Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL. Their first appearance in Europe’s elite competition was very successful on and off the court with Omichka registering the largest audience among all 24 participating teams with an average of 5,000 fans attending their home matches at V. Blinov sports complex.
