Besiktas en route to Challenge Cup final after away victory over Impel WROCLAW
2014 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women

Wroclaw, Poland, February 26, 2014. Turkish teams continue to perform strong in this year’s European Cup competitions; with VakifBank and Eczacibasi VitrA in the Final Four of the CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League and Fenerbahce only one step away from the last act of the CEV Volleyball Cup, the underdogs of Besiktas ISTANBUL look well on their way to make the final of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup. On Wednesday Besiktas edged past Impel WROCLAW of Poland in the first leg of the semis by 3:1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-22, and 25-16) to get the right edge before the return game coming up this weekend in Turkey’s megalopolis.

Actually the hosts of Impel had caught a very promising start leading the way all the way through the final 25-18 in the opening set with Katarzyna Konieczna scoring four aces. They continued the same way also in the second set (8:4) before things changed quite dramatically with Besiktas cruising past at the second mandatory stop (13:16) and holding on to their lead up to the final 20-25. The score was tight up to the second technical time-out of the third set but Besiktas broke away after the break and then imposed their rule in a fourth set that was literally one-sided.

Belarusian Marina Tumas (pictured) top scored in the end for Besiktas with 21 points with Selime Ilyasoglu and Paula Yamila Nizetich also finishing the game in double digits for the winners of the 2013 BVA Cup as they tallied up 16 and 11 respectively. Katarzyna Konieczna paced Impel with 17 with Makare Wilson and Bogumila Pyziolek adding another 12 and 11 to the count of the home team. Konieczna was taken to the hospital after she collided with Dorota Medynska early in the fourth set and this paved the way with gold for Besiktas on their way to this victory.

“There is not much to say about this match” said the Norwegian-born mentor of Impel, Tore Aleksandersen. “I would like to apologize for our poor performance. I think this was the worst game that Impel has played this season here in Wroclaw. I hope that the re-match in Istanbul will be much better for us.”
