CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals
Luxembourg, May 20, 2019. The CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals have fulfilled the goal – delivering something truly unique and unprecedented in Volleyball history, in many ways. It was the first time men’s and women’s teams contested their matches at the same venue and could celebrate side by side at the end of the medal ceremony. This accounted for some truly special scenes, with the top male and female players in Europe standing together on the podium and sharing the same smiles and tears of joy.
The concept of the Super Finals is a truly revolutionary one, not only in Volleyball, but across all team sports as well. The very best teams in Europe convened in Berlin to turn the Max-Schmeling-Halle into ‘Europe’s Volleyball temple’ with the help of a sell-out crowd of 9,046 fans and a gigantic show including video mapping, the use of LED wristbands provided to all spectators and much more.
Francesca Piccinini, who claimed her seventh European trophy in Berlin at the age of 40, shares this feeling: “What an emotion and an experience it was to play a final in such an ambiance,” she said. It was a happy return to Berlin and to Max-Schmeling-Halle for her – the very same place where she helped Italy claim a truly historic World Championship title back in 2002.
Players, fans and media alike had only positive reviews about the Super Finals, emphasising the importance of taking both the top men’s and women’s teams to such an iconic venue. Moreover, the eventual winners of each final received € 400,000 out of a record-breaking purse standing at € 1.2 million.
