Eindhoven to host CEV Continental Cup Finals on the #RoadToTokyo
2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Luxembourg, October 11, 2019. The CEV and the Dutch Volleyball Federation (Nevobo) are equally proud to announce the host city of the 2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals. The Olympic qualifying event will be running from June 22 to 28 in Eindhoven, a city known already for playing host to multiple major sporting events. Eindhoven has been hosting stops of the Dutch Beach Volleyball national tour for a few years already, but the Continental Cup Finals will obviously raise the profile of Beach Volleyball in the Dutch city to an unprecedented level.

The event is the next step in the close cooperation established by the CEV and Nevobo, after the Netherlands were one of the four countries to host the record-breaking CEV EuroVolley 2019 Men. Moreover, the city of Apeldoorn is due to host the CEV Tokyo Volleyball European Olympic Qualification 2020 for women’s national teams in early January.

The CEV Continental Cup Finals will feature teams from 16 countries – including the Netherlands – per gender, with the eventual winners securing a spot for their NOC in the Beach Volleyball competition of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Back in 2016, the Netherlands and Austria achieved this feat in the women’s and men’s competition, respectively, at the Continental Cup Finals held in Stavanger, Norway.

The 15 nations due to join the home teams will emerge from the 2nd Round of the competition due to take place in mid-May 2020 in Austria, Spain and Turkey (click here for further details). Participation will be open only to those teams that have not yet qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games through the FIVB World Ranking, the 2019 World Championships or the intercontinental Olympic qualifying event held in September 2019 in China.

“It is great that we have succeeded in bringing the CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals to the province of Brabant, and more specifically to the city of Eindhoven,” says Peter Sprenger, President of the Dutch Volleyball Federation. “Both our men’s and women’s teams have been amongst the best teams in the world for years now. To be able to host this Olympic qualification tournament is a unique opportunity, both for the city of Eindhoven and for the region. With this we show that through cooperation with various parties, we really make Brabant stronger through sport.”

Even though Eindhoven is relatively new on the European Beach Volleyball map, the Netherlands have a wealth of experience in hosting such major events – as they delivered a historic EuroBeachVolley in the summer of 2018 with the competition held across as many as four cities – The Hague, Apeldoorn, Rotterdam and Utrecht – for the first time ever.

“Bringing in this tournament fulfils our ambition to organise more international sporting events as a city,” says Stijn Steenbakkers, Alderman of Sports of Eindhoven. “For us it is always about strengthening the combination between top sport and recreational activities. That is why we are organising side events as well, in order to inspire kids and other visitors. Events like the Continental Cup Finals are increasing the liveliness of the city centre by making top sport and side events easily accessible.”
