Denmark’s men secure spot in second round of #CEVContinentalCup
2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

Umag, Croatia, June 22, 2019. The Pool G matches of the 2018-2020 CEV Beach Volleyball Continental Cup started on Saturday at the iconic Stella Maris beach in Umag where teams from six nations are hoping to make their first step towards qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

On the men’s side, Denmark secured first place in the pool after claiming a Golden Match with Estonia, where Kristoffer Abell/Martin Trans Hansen (pictured) proved to be the winning combination for the Scandinavians. On Saturday, they first beat Croatia’s Marin Jerčić/Andrej Štorc, before securing a victory over Estonia’s Dimitriy Korotkov/Mihkel Tanila, on their way to the Golden Match against Kusti Nõlvak and Mart Tiisaar. On Sunday morning Estonia, Croatia and Albania will battle for the second place and the remaining ticket to the next phase of the Continental Cup.

“The tournament is taking place in an excellent location, except for the bad weather, which unfortunately did not help today. Umag and Stella Maris again proved to be excellent hosts for all national teams and visitors, giving the players the best possible conditions. As we lost against the eventual winners, Denmark, we must seek our chance to qualify in Sunday’s matches against Albania and Estonia. We are expecting nice weather, so that means a better atmosphere on the stands and more fans, visiting this great Beach Volleyball event,” said home star Marin Jerčić.

If we already know the winners of the men’s competition, this is not the case for the women’s event yet. On Saturday, there were wins for Romania and Lithuania against both pairs of the host nation, Croatia. Vytene Vitkauskaite and Urte Andriukaityte opened the competition with a win against Croatia’s Sara Radanović and Valentina Vrbanc, while their teammates Irina Zobnina and Ieva Dumbauskaite bested Croatian pair Mirna Bečić/Erika Drviš. Romanian pairs, Ioana-Alexandra Ordean/Beata Vaida and Adina Stanciu/Adriana Sorina Raileanu, also proved to be hard opponents for the Croatian girls, recording another two wins.

As a result, both Lithuania and Romania are through to the next round of the competition regardless of the outcome of their clash on Sunday.
