Women’s semi-finals fixed; Liechtenstein men's team qualifies for the round of 12

Vaduz, Liechtenstein, August 10, 2018. After the third day of matches at the 1-Star/Satellite in Vaduz, all the women’s semi-finalists are known. The four remaining women teams come from Poland, Greece, the USA and Switzerland. Meanwhile pool play has finished in the men’s competition, sketching the favourites of the tournament.
Russians Myskiv/Samoday continue their winning streak
After successfully passing the qualification round, last week’s Ljubljana Satellite winners Taras Myskiv/Valeriy Samoday kept the slate clean by recording two consecutive 2-0 wins against two Latvian teams - Haralds Regza/Toms Smedins and Kristaps Smits/Mihails Samoilovs. The Russians now have secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
The Bronze medallists from Ljubljana, the young Swiss players Florian Breer/Yves Haussener also managed to top their pool after a tight 2-1 (16-21, 21-15, 20-18) win against Oleksii Denin/Denys Denysenko of Ukraine and a much easier 2-0 (21-10 21-14) against Turkey’s Ali Berke Sagir/Yusuf Ozdemir earlier in the day. Another team to continue the competition from Pool D are the local heroes, the only men’s team from Liechtenstein, Manuel Gahr/Maximilian von Deichmann, who used the home advantage and grabbed a 2-1 (22-24, 21-13, 15-12) win against Turkey and will seek to delight their fans as the tournament progresses.
Mateusz Paszkowski/Mateusz Lysikowski of Poland also managed to move directly into the second round of the elimination stage as they beat the first-seeded Swiss team Quentin Métral/Simon Hagenbuch 2-0 (21-14, 21-19) in the game that decided the eventual pool winners.
Last, but not least Ukraine’s Sergiy Popov/Vladyslav Iemelianchyk grabbed the final ticket to the quarter-finals as they came out of the pool play with two 2-1 wins against Austria’s Thomas Kunert/Peter Eglseer and the third-seeded team from Brazil, Márcio Gaudie Ley/Arthur Diego Mariano Lanci.
The round of 12 starts tomorrow at 10:00, the quarter-finals at 16:00, local time.
Switzerland will meet USA and Poland to lock horns with Greece in the women's semis
Although they stumbled in the pool play and thus needed to start the elimination stage from round one, Switzerland’s Esmée Böbner/Zoé Vergé-Dépré came back on track with two 2-0 wins against Erika Sofia Mongelos Bobadilla/Gabriela Filippo from Paraguay and the Dutch girls Puk Stubbe/Emma Piersma, the games lasted 30 and 29 minutes respectively. Their summary after the match sounded just as convincing: "We served excellently and our block-defence system worked very well." In the semifinals tomorrow they will meet the Americans Alexandra Wheeler/Lara Dykstra, who won 2-1 (21-18, 16-21, 15-8) against the Klinger sisters from Austria.

The other semi-final will consist of Agata Ceynowa/Martyna Kloda from Poland, who survived two tie-breakers in the elimination stage as they recorded 2-1 victories against Kim Huber/Tatjana Greber from Switzerland and Katja Stam/Julia Wouters of The Netherlands. Their opponents will be a team from Greece, Dimitra Manavi/Konstantina Tsopoulou, who managed a fast, but not as easy 2-0 (21-13, 25-23) win against Australia’s Nicole Laird/Brittany Kendall.
