Samsun, Turkey, July 28, 2018. Teams from Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden, Austria and the Netherlands will vie for the medals at the 1-Star Samsun Open on Sunday.

In the men’s quarter finals, Jindrich Weiss/Donovan Dzavoronok of the Czech Republic beat Djordje Klasnic/Marko Plavsic of Serbia 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) while Thomas Kunert/Peter Eglseer (AUT) beat Rahman Raoufi/Abolhamed Mirzaali of Iran 21-18, 13-21, 15-11 and qualified to semis as well. “I am happy that we could win the match and qualified to the semis. Thank you to the home fans for their support,” Weiss said. Interestingly enough, his partner Dzavoronok has been playing in the elite Italian Superlega for the last couple of years with Vero Volley MONZA.

The Dutch qualifiers Stefan Boermans/Casper Haanappel qualified to the semis too, doing so after a 2-1 victory (15-21, 21-10, 15-6) over another Czech team, David Kufa and Jakub Gala.

In the last match of the men’s quarterfinals, another Czech team, Marcel Myslivecek and Martin Pihera, secured the last semi-final spot as they beat Bahman Salemiinjehboroun/Arash Vakili (IRI) in three sets (21-17, 19-21, 15-13).

Teams from Italy, Sweden, Czech Republic and Austria progressed to the women’s semi-finals of the 1-Star event in Samsun. Saturday featured a long programme with the last pool matches and the Round of 12 followed by the quarterfinals to determine the composition of Sunday’s semis.

Italy’s Carolina Ferraris/Francesca Michieletto (pictured above) opened the programme of the quarterfinals playing Czech Republic’s Karolina Rehackova/Marie-Sara Stochlova for a spot in the semis. The Italian outsiders could find their rhythm and celebrated a compelling 21-15, 21-18 victory. “I cannot believe that we are in the semi-finals of the Samsun Open,” Ferraris said. “We did not expect this result but we are happy and now we want to win our semi-final match as well.” Ferraris and Michieletto started their campaign on Thursday in the qualification round.

Sweden’s Camilla Nilsson/Sofia Ögren played Hungary’s Eszter Lutter and Szandra Szombathelyi for a spot in the semis. The Swedish team defeated their Hungarian opponents in 36 minutes only (21-17, 21-17) to play Ferraris/Michieletto in the semis.

No. 1 seeded Austrians Eva Freiberger/Valerie Teufl celebrated a victory over Czech Republic’s Sara Olivova/Tereza Pluharova 2-1 (21-14, 17-21, 15-8) to move on to the semis. Another Czech team, Nicole Dostalova/Anna Komarkova beat Marta Duda and Marta Lodej of Poland 2-1 (21-16, 19-21, 15-10), thus taking the last spot in the semis.
