Watch out for Germany’s rising star, U18 European champion Sven Winter
News from the National Federations

Freiburg, Germany, August 28, 2014. Though he is only 16, Sven Winter has already written a piece of history in his relatively short Beach Volleyball career. Last Sunday, together with partner Julius Thole from Hamburg, the young Sven won gold at the 2014 CEV U18 Beach Volleyball European Championship in Kristiansand, Norway, thereby cementing Germany’s supremacy in under-age competitions. Actually, Julius Thole and Sven Winter are Germany’s only second pair to top the final standing of the U18 Championship after Stefan Uhmann and Hendrik Matthiessen had done so back in 2003.

Winter plays for the FT1844 sports club in Freiburg, a real Beach Volleyball “talent factory” which has already forged players who have won several national titles in all age groups. Though he is just 16, Sven Winter won this year Germany’s U17 and U19 Beach Volleyball Championship as well as the Beach Federal Cup before he went on to leave his mark at the U18 European Championship in Norway.

Winter and his home partner Niklas Stooss, who is also only 16, joined forces earlier this summer to win the U17 German Championship as well as the Beach Federal Cup. Winter and Stooss are being closely monitored by Germany’s national coaches and the newly crowned U18 European champion may be a factor not only on sand, but also indoors.

Starting from this coming September, Winter and Stooss will move to the Lake of Constance and join the volleyball boarding school of VfB FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, Germany’s multiple champions and a major force to be reckoned with also in the European Cups.
