Schwaiger sisters highlight third day at Baden Masters, both on and off the court
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Baden Masters

Baden, Austria, May 30, 2014. The third day of action at the Baden Masters was shattered by the news following a press conference where 2013 European champion Doris Schwaiger announced her retirement from the sport at the end of this tournament (see here). The Schwaiger siblings turned into national heroines last year in Klagenfurt as they won European gold to put the icing on the cake of a career spanning through 15 years.

“I have been thinking about this for about one year,” Doris said while addressing dozens of journalists. “It has been very hard to find the motivation to push yourself to the limit every day. The Baden Masters will be my last tournament. It is the perfect stage and moment for this step. With all of family and friends around me it will be easier to go through this experience.” This means that Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger won’t try to retain their European crown next week in Cagliari once the 2014 edition of the European Championship gets underway on Poetto beach.

Doris’ sister Stefanie was also quite surprised about the plans of her sibling. “Doris spoke with me about this one week ago,” she said. “Of course I have to accept her decision.” Stefanie doesn’t know yet if she will continue to play. “It is still too early for me to answer this question. I have been playing with Doris for 15 years and never thought about playing with any different partner than her.”

Two hours after an emotional press conference and many interviews, the Schwaiger siblings made it to the court and showed one of the best performances of the day, as playing without any pressure they easily routed Norway’s Janne Kongshavn and Faye Kjølberg by 21-16, 21-19 in front of a packed centre court.
The show will continue on Saturday morning with the top teams of the Main Draw having all made the third round of the elimination phase. The group includes 2013 European silver medalists Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo of Spain as well as Dutchwomen Madelein Meppelink/Marleen van Iersel and Finland’s twins Erika and Emilia Nyström.
