Europe’s Beach Volleyball elite to compete at Baden Masters
2014 CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship - Baden Masters

Luxembourg, May 14, 2014. The reigning European champions Adrian Gavira/Pablo Herrera and Doris Schwaiger/Stefanie Schwaiger are all set to compete at the Baden Masters coming up later this month in Vienna’s outskirts and that will open the programme of this year’s CEV Beach Volleyball European Championship.

The home heroines (pictured) who seized the day last August at Austria’s largest sandbox in Klagenfurt will try to cement their leadership on home soil going for back-to-back crowns also at the Baden Masters. The Schwaiger siblings will nevertheless take on a series of very tough rivals, including their opponents in the final match of the 2013 European Championship, Spain’s Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo. The Spaniards actually top the entry lists that were released on Wednesday and will be looking to avenge the defeat they suffered last year before 8,000 ecstatic fans on the shores of the Wörthersee. Other top pairs to watch out for are Italy’s Marta Menegatti and Viktoria Orsi Toth, Dutchwomen Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel, as well as Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic.

2013 European champions Herrera and Gavira will also get to play Europe’s Beach Volleyball elite in Baden, with reigning world champions Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen (NED) and Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo – winners of two consecutive World Tour stops in China – also set to participate in the tournament. Two-time European champion Clemens Doppler and partner Alexander Horst as well as Xandi Huber/Robin Seidl will carry the hopes of the host country to make it to the matches where the medals will be at stake. Last year’s European bronze medallists Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel of Poland have also registered for the competition to complete a stellar starting field.

The profile of the players set to compete at the Baden Masters has never been as high as this year and world-class matches are expected as the tournament will come to a close only a couple of days before the start of the European Championship Final in Cagliari, Italy.
