Start of Youth Continental Cup Final postponed to Friday following national mourning in Turkey
2014 CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup - Final

Antalya, Turkey, May 14, 2014. Following three days of national mourning declared by the Turkish government after an underground mine fire killed at least 274 people at a coal mine in Soma, the start of the inaugural CEV Youth Beach Volleyball Continental Cup – Final has been postponed to Friday.

Rescue work is still ongoing in Soma and the number of trapped workers is said to be as high as 800. A series of other sports events – including matches in amateur and professional soccer leagues – have been postponed to a later date as well.

To stick to the actions undertaken by Turkey’s Ministry of Youth and Sports, the first matches of the Youth Continental Cup Final that were due to take place on Thursday at the campus of Akdeniz University in Antalya (see picture) were postponed as well. The CEV and the local organisers have therefore re-scheduled the programme of the competition where six tickets per gender will be at stake to compose the European contingent for the 2014 Youth Olympics in Nanjing. The tournament will now start on Friday, May 16, and come to a close – as originally planned – on Saturday, May 17.

On behalf of Europe’s Volleyball family CEV President André Meyer would like to offer his condolences and sympathy to the Turkish people and to the families of those who died in the mines.
